TOUR
Work of People Living among Sheep and Nature
Workshop and Ranch Visits
& Hands-on Yarn Spinning Experience
with the Homespun Artisan
INTRODUCTION
Experience the culture of the relationship between sheep and people nurtured in Japan’s cold regions.
“Homespun” derives its meaning from “spun at home” and refers to hand-spun and hand-woven woolen fabric which is believed to have originated in Scotland and Ireland. The technique was introduced to Japan around 1881, and during the Taisho era, there was a high demand for “warm military and official uniforms,” which led the government to promote sheep farming. As a result, homespun fabrics began to be produced all over Japan.
However, homespun production declined in the modern era due to factors like industrialization. Today, only Iwate has continued to preserve the traditional techniques of hand-spinning and hand-weaving, making it the sole “origin” of homespun fabric in Japan.
This tour allows you to experience Iwate’s culture, history, and cuisine deeply rooted in the tradition of homespun fabric. Of course, you’ll also get to explore the charm of homespun fabric itself. The yarn you spin will be transformed into a scarf by artisans and delivered to you at a later date.* In the 1 night, 2 days’ course, you can enjoy your stay in a vacation rental where you can “enjoy your stay as if you were living here”.
* Additional charges apply for shipping outside of Japan.

Striving to become Japan’s top shepherd and support the culture of sheep
A sheep ranch “Raumul Farm”
Mr. Nishizaki, originally from Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture, worked at large ranches in Hokkaido before returning to Iwate in 2020. He aimed to become “Japan’s best shepherd” and established this ranch in 2021. The sheep he raises here are crossbreeds of Suffolk, which is known for having the highest breeding number in Japan, breeds like Manx Loaghtan and Jacob, both of which are meat breeds but also have wool that can be utilized. In the future, he might become a key figure in supporting “Iwate’s sheep culture,” including homespun.
